Heart Rate Monitor for Garmin: Chest Strap & Armband That Just Pair

This page is for Garmin owners who want a chest strap or armband that pairs with a Forerunner, Fenix, Venu, vivoactive, Instinct or Edge without paying Garmin's price for an HRM-Dual or HRM-Pro. Wrist optical sensors lag on intervals; an external sensor fixes that.

The one-line answer: yes, both Powr Labs heart rate monitors pair with Garmin watches and Edge computers, over ANT+ or Bluetooth. Garmin devices from 2016 onward support external heart rate sensors on both protocols, and the Chest HRM broadcasts both at once.

How to pair a heart rate monitor with a Garmin

Before you pair: the one rule that fixes most problems

The chest strap only wakes up when it touches your skin. Do these every time, in this order:

  1. Wet the two textured pads on the back of the strap with a splash of water.
  2. Put the strap on just below your chest muscles, snug but comfortable, with the wet pads flat against your skin. The "L" mark on the sensor points to your left.
  3. Clear old pairings. If the monitor shows up in your phone's Settings → Bluetooth list, tap "Forget This Device." The strap holds one Bluetooth connection at a time.
  4. Pair from inside the app or device sensor menu, never from the phone's main Bluetooth menu.
  5. Watch the logo light. When it connects, the white light flashes for about 20 seconds and then turns off. That is normal; you are still connected.

Armband instead? Slide it onto your forearm near the elbow or your upper arm, sensor flat against the inside of your arm. It turns on when it touches skin; hold still 10–15 seconds, then select "Powr Labs Armband HRM" in your app.

Garmin watch (Forerunner, Fenix, Venu, vivoactive, Instinct)

  1. Wear the monitor so it is awake and broadcasting.
  2. On the watch, hold Menu (or open the controls menu) and go to Settings → Sensors & Accessories → Add New.
  3. Choose Search All, or pick External Heart Rate if listed.
  4. Select the Powr Labs monitor when it appears. Choose ANT+ if the watch offers both; Bluetooth works too.
  5. Start an activity. The heart rate icon on the activity screen turns solid when the sensor is connected.

Garmin Edge bike computer

  1. Wear the monitor.
  2. On the Edge, go to Settings → Sensors → Add Sensor (older models: Menu → Settings → Sensors).
  3. Choose Heart Rate or Search All and select the Powr Labs monitor.
  4. Start your ride; heart rate shows on your data screens.

Garmin's own instructions: pairing sensors and what to do if a sensor will not pair.

Garmin troubleshooting

  • The watch searches forever. The strap is not awake. Wet the pads and put it on before you open the Sensors menu; the logo light should flash for about 20 seconds.
  • It pairs to my phone but not my watch. Your phone grabbed the single Bluetooth connection. Go to Settings → Bluetooth → Forget on the phone, then pair the watch over ANT+ so this cannot happen again.
  • Heart rate reads from the wrist instead. Garmin uses the external sensor automatically once paired, but check the activity's sensor status icon. If the watch still uses the wrist sensor, remove and re-add the monitor.
  • Dropouts on the bike. Move the Edge mount closer or switch the sensor to the other protocol. Re-wet the pads on long rides.
  • No light at all. Replace the CR2032. Powr Labs sends free replacement batteries in your first 12 months.

Frequently asked questions

Is the Powr Labs chest strap compatible with Garmin watches?

Yes. Any Garmin watch or Edge bike computer from 2016 onward that accepts external heart rate sensors can pair with it over ANT+ or Bluetooth. Add it from the device's Sensors & Accessories menu.

ANT+ or Bluetooth on a Garmin?

ANT+ is the classic choice for Garmin and lets a phone app use Bluetooth at the same time. If your Garmin only shows Bluetooth sensors, Bluetooth works just as well.

Does it work as a Garmin HRM alternative for HRV and recovery metrics?

The Chest HRM sends R-R intervals, which Garmin uses for HRV-based features. It does not record running dynamics, which require Garmin's own HRM-Pro series.

Does the armband work with Garmin?

Yes, over ANT+ or Bluetooth, and it can stay connected to up to three devices at once. It is currently sold out; email support@powr-labs.com for a restock notice.

Will my Garmin and Zwift both see heart rate at once?

Yes: Garmin over ANT+, Zwift over Bluetooth. ANT+ is a broadcast, so many receivers can listen while one Bluetooth device holds the connection.
