How to Pair a Heart Rate Monitor With Peloton, Zwift, Garmin, Strava and Apple Watch (All the Steps)

Powr Labs chest heart rate monitor connectivity across watches, apps and bike computers

Nearly every "my heart rate monitor won't pair" email we get comes down to the same three things: the strap was not on the body, the phone's Bluetooth menu had claimed it, or the person was pairing from the wrong screen. This guide gives you the universal routine first, then the exact steps for Peloton, Zwift, Garmin, Strava and Apple Watch. Each section links to a longer platform page with troubleshooting and FAQ.

The steps are written for the Powr Labs Chest HRM and Armband, but they apply to any monitor that uses the standard Bluetooth and ANT+ heart rate profiles.

What you need before you start

  • A heart rate monitor that uses the standard Bluetooth heart rate profile, ANT+, or both. Every Powr Labs monitor does.
  • The app or device you want to pair to, updated to its current version.
  • For a chest strap: water for the electrodes. For an armband: a charged battery.
  • Two minutes. Pairing is fast when the monitor is awake and nothing else is holding it.

Bluetooth or ANT+?

Both Powr Labs monitors broadcast Bluetooth and ANT+ at the same time, so there is nothing to switch. Phones, tablets, Apple TV, Peloton and Apple Watch use Bluetooth. Garmin and Wahoo computers, and Zwift on a PC with a dongle, prefer ANT+. The practical difference: a chest strap holds one Bluetooth connection at a time, while ANT+ is a broadcast that any number of receivers can listen to. So a phone app (Bluetooth) plus a Garmin (ANT+) works; two phone apps at once does not, unless you use the Armband, which can hold up to three connections.

The pre-pair routine (do this every time)

  1. Wet the two textured pads on the back of the chest strap.
  2. Put it on just below your chest muscles, snug, "L" mark to your left. The sensor only wakes up on skin contact.
  3. Forget old pairings. If the monitor shows in your phone's Settings → Bluetooth list, tap "Forget This Device."
  4. Pair from inside the app or device sensor menu, never from the phone's Bluetooth settings.
  5. Check the logo light. A white flash for about 20 seconds, then off, means connected.

Armband users: slide it onto your forearm near the elbow or your upper arm, sensor flat against the inside of your arm. It turns on when it detects skin; hold still for 10–15 seconds so the optical sensor locks on.

Peloton (Bike, Bike+, Tread, app)

  1. Wear the monitor and turn on the Peloton or open the app.
  2. Go to Settings → Heart Rate Monitor.
  3. Tap Connect next to the Powr Labs monitor.
  4. Your heart rate appears on screen during class; zones and Strive Score use it automatically.

Zwift (iOS, Android, Apple TV, PC, Mac)

  1. Wear the monitor and open Zwift. On a PC or Mac, plug in your ANT+ dongle or turn on Bluetooth.
  2. On the pairing screen, select the Heart Rate box.
  3. Choose the Powr Labs monitor from the list (pick the ANT+ or Bluetooth entry on a computer).
  4. Select OK and ride.

Apple TV allows two Bluetooth sensors plus the remote; pair the trainer first, or bridge sensors through the Zwift Companion app. Full guide: Heart rate monitor for Zwift.

Garmin (watches and Edge)

  1. Wear the monitor.
  2. On a watch: hold Menu → Settings → Sensors & Accessories → Add New → Search All. On an Edge: Settings → Sensors → Add Sensor.
  3. Select the Powr Labs monitor; choose ANT+ if offered.
  4. Start an activity. The heart rate icon turns solid when connected.

Works with Garmin devices from 2016 onward that accept external sensors. Full guide: Heart rate monitor for Garmin.

Strava (iPhone and Android)

  1. Wear the monitor and open Strava. On Android, allow Location and Nearby Devices permissions.
  2. Tap Record, slide the menu up, tap Add a Sensor.
  3. Select the Powr Labs monitor and tap Done.
  4. Tap Start. Heart rate is saved with the activity.

Apple Watch and iPhone

  1. Wear the monitor. If your iPhone lists it under Bluetooth, tap Forget first.
  2. On the watch: Settings → Bluetooth, then tap the monitor under Health Devices.
  3. Open the Workout app and start a workout; the watch uses the strap and saves to Apple Health.

No Apple Watch? Apple Health does not pair with sensors directly. Pair inside Strava, Elite HRV, Polar Beat or another app and let it sync to Health. Full guide: Heart rate monitor for Apple Watch.

Other apps and devices

Wahoo Fitness and ELEMNT, Polar Beat and Polar watches, Elite HRV, MapMyRun, Heart Graph, Suunto, COROS and Bryton all follow the same pattern: find the Sensors or Heart Rate menu, search, select. Exact steps for each are on the full pairing guide. Group-class platforms such as Orangetheory may ask for the device ID printed on the back of the sensor.

If it still will not pair

  • Not in the list: strap not on skin, pads dry, or the phone's Bluetooth menu owns it. Fix those three and search again.
  • Connects to the phone but not the watch: Forget it on the phone, then pair the watch (over ANT+ if possible).
  • Jumpy or wrong reading: re-wet the pads, tighten the strap, try the other protocol. See Chest HRM troubleshooting.
  • No light at all: the CR2032 is flat. See battery replacement; replacements are free for your first 12 months.
  • Light goes off before 20 seconds: the connection dropped; see what the pairing light means.

Still stuck? Email support@powr-labs.com with your order number and the app or device you are pairing to, and tell us what the logo light does when you put the strap on; that one detail usually points straight at the fix. Every Powr Labs monitor is covered by a 12-month no-questions warranty and 30-day returns.
